Tips for Volunteers
What to Bring
If you are electing to do a simple coffee hour scenario, please bring:
a
pint of milk
a pint of half
& half
a roll of paper
towels
It's smart to bring your own dish towel, so that you can just take it home and
throw it in your own laundry and avoid wondering where the ones in the kitchen
have been.
If you choose to do a full coffee hour please bring the items listed above plus
as much food as you wish. The group tends to be about 100 people, but people
don't need a full meal. Do as much or as little as you wish.
Some coffee hour favorites include:
coffee
cake
breakfast breads
bagels
muffins
cookies
fruit*
a gallon of fruit
juice (such as apple), which is appreciated by the children.
Talk among yourselves to avoid duplication (I'll give you a topic -
"what are you bringing?")
The suggested costs for each team member should not be more than $10.
Set-Up
Volunteers should arrive by 10:40 in the kitchen to get food ready for serving
immediately following the service. You don’t need to make the coffee, as this
is done by the sexton. However, it is suggested that you make sure that all
setup of items associated with the coffee/tea (putting out coffee cups, cream
and sugar, stirrers, napkins, etc) is done before putting out the food, as it
is highly desirable that this be done before people start getting out of church
service. Tables are not available for set-up of food/snacks in advance as they
are most often used during the children's classes. To have adequate time for set
up, volunteers head for the kitchen (moving briskly) at the start of the last
hymn.
Clean-up
Coffee hour usually runs until 12:45pm or so and cleanup is usually done by
1:00pm if everyone helps with washing dishes and generally cleaning up the
kitchen and tables. Be sure to include emptying and cleaning the coffee pots
while cleaning up following the end of coffee hour.
* Note, we advise against
bringing grapes as these tend to get dropped and squashed on the floor. If you
do bring grapes, please be prepared to be vigilant in picking them up.
