Prayer Group
| It is Wednesday at 7:00, a few people are setting up seven chairs in a circle in the Nursery. Some are regulars, who know each other well, some are just here when they especially need to pray. The group arrives gradually, and the conversation begins, someone takes the lead to explain the format to a newcomer, the conversation starts light, and then you realize that people are all mentioning the things which are worrying them most, those things which they need to pray about. One person hesitates to bring his concern, he feels it is too minor compared to the deaths an illnesses others in the group are concerned with, but the problems on your mind are never too minor, or too major. Someone lights the candle in the chalice, and we read a psalm in unison, repeating over and over until we have read for five minutes. Promptly at 7:25 Emerson rings the Tibetan temple bell. The sound ripples, growing softer but still present, I focus on the candle, breath in, breath out, and then try to focus on the prayer requests we had discussed. Some people say a concern, some do not, after half an hour of silence or spoken word Emerson again sounds the gong, and we all slowly look up, then take each other's hands, and say the Lord's Prayer in unison. We return to our homes, families, and lives. Some will be back next week, some got what they needed, or didn't and will not return, whether or not they do, we had a magic time together.
